ALL PROCEEDS TO PETER MCVERRY TRUST
#endhomelessnessnow

Lights of Apollo was written in response to the HomeSweetHome occupation of the Apollo House building in Dublin, where numbers of homeless people were short-term housed over Christmas 2016. As well as keeping a number of people safe and warm for the length of the occupation, all residents were facilitated in finding long-term housing solutions on the closure of the House. The campaign highlighted the desperate circumstances of many and helped to ramp up the conversation about Ireland's housing crisis. The organisers prepared an Emergency Housing Document that is available here:

Father Peter McVerry has been working with Dublin's inner city homeless for 30 years, in particular its youth population. He is a tireless advocate for homeless services in Ireland and has been a sharp critic of the inadequacy of Government social policies. Read more about the work of his organisation here:

For further reading on the housing crisis in Ireland, the 2016 pre-budget submission to the Irish Government by Threshold, an NGO that provides advice and advocacy and aims "to secure a right to housing", is substantive:

lyrics

GETTING READY TO DRIVE HOME FOR CHRISTMAS
THOUGH I AM NOT DRIVING VERY FAR
I RECOGNISE I'M RELATIVELY PRIVILEGED
THAT I AM NOT SLEEPING IN THIS CAR

OH HOW WE NEED TO KEEP IT SIMPLE
OH HOW WE NEED TO SEE THAT PEOPLE
JUST WANT A ROOM SOMEWHERE
THEY JUST NEED A ROOM SOMEWHERE

AND THE STARS CAME OUT FROM UNDERGROUND
TO TURN ON THE LIGHTS OF APOLLO HOUSE
AND KEEP SOME PEOPLE OFF THE STREETS TONIGHT

GETTING READY TO DRIVE HOME FOR CHRISTMAS
THIS YEAR'S BEEN A STRUGGLE FOR ME
TO KEEP MY HEAD ABOVE IRISH WATER
BUT I'VE KEPT A ROOF OVER IT THANKFULLY

OH HOW WE NEED TO KEEP IT SIMPLE
THERE ARE FOLKS WITHOUT HOMES
AND HOMES WITHOUT PEOPLE
LET'S GIVE THEM A ROOM SOMEWHERE
THEY JUST NEED A ROOM SOMEWHERE

AND ALL OF THIS TALK ABOUT RENTAL RETURNS
IS JUST NERO FIDDLING WHILE DUBLIN BURNS
AND PEOPLE FREEZE ON CITY STREETS TONIGHT

AND IF YOU FEEL HELPLESS I DO UNDERSTAND
BUT WE CAN'T FIX IT ALL SO WE DO WHAT WE CAN
TO KEEP SOME PEOPLE ALIVE TONIGHT

BECAUSE THERE BUT FOR THE GRACE OF FATHER AND MOTHER
THERE BUT FOR THE GRACE OF SISTER AND BROTHER
THERE BUT FOR THE GRACE OF GOOD FRIENDS AND LOVERS
GO I

AND THE STARS CAME OUT FROM UNDERGROUND
TO TURN ON THE LIGHTS OF APOLLO HOUSE
AND KEEP SOME PEOPLE OFF THE STREETS TONIGHT
